Nestled in the fertile Nimbin Valley, Marlivale Farm is celebrating harvest season, with the first of this year’s pecans now arriving at the Mullumbimby Farmers Market alongside a remarkable range of freshly harvested rice and handcrafted pantry staples.
While the new-season pecans are always eagerly awaited, they’re just one part of the farm’s impressive paddock-to-pantry story. Whole pecans, cracked pecans for baking, and the farm’s much-loved pecan spread are all made from the harvest, with the spread crafted simply from lightly roasted pecans and nothing else.
The rice harvest has also just wrapped up, meaning customers are now enjoying this year’s crop at its freshest. Marlivale Farm grows two distinctive varieties – a Japanese upland rice available as both brown and white rice, and a fragrant long-grain variety with delicate coconut notes. Both are available in 1kg or 5kg bags, making them perfect for everyday meals or stocking the pantry.
To ensure maximum freshness, the farm mills its rice flour every two weeks in small batches. The range also includes crisp brown rice cakes made from 100 per cent whole brown rice, and gluten-free rice crumbs, perfect for coating fish, chicken and vegetables.
What truly sets Marlivale Farm apart is its commitment to using every part of the harvest. When brown rice is milled into white rice, the nutritious bran is collected and sold for fermenting vegetables. The rice husks are reused as animal bedding or as a natural garden mulch that improves soil aeration and drainage. Even the broken pecan kernels are transformed into their popular pecan spread, ensuring virtually nothing goes to waste.
It’s a thoughtful approach that reflects generations of farming in the Nimbin Valley – growing quality produce, adding value on the farm, and making the most of every harvest.
Whether you’re after fresh new-season pecans, fragrant rice, freshly milled rice flour or wholesome gluten-free pantry staples, Marlivale Farm offers a delicious showcase of Northern Rivers produce every Friday from 7am to 11am at the Mullumbimby Farmers Market.
