SUMMARY:Seed Savers @ Mullumbimby Farmers' Market Dec 11
DESCRIPTION:If you live in the Byron Shire and are interested in a low-cost way to grow lots of food year after year in your own home garden\, don’t miss the Byron Seed Share at the Mullumbimby Farmers Market this Friday Dec11.\nMusic\nEvery Week Mullumbimby Farmers’ Market hosts live music from talented local musicians.\nThis weeks musicians are: \nMain Stage: Skyeater \nFar Stage: Naomi/Alex \nSeed Savers\nThe event will also be showcasing and giving away locally saved seeds and perennial foods that are suitable for growing in the Byron Shire\, and include discussions and talks with local experts about seed saving\, food security and perennial foods. Byron Hinterland Seed Savers\, the local organisers of the event\, will showcase a website that serves as the local hub for home gardeners. \n“Byron Seed Share is a free community-fed platform designed to support abundant\, low maintenance gardens whilst giving the community access to other gardeners” said Paul Crebar\, of Byron Hinterland Seed Savers. \n“You simply register for free and then you can record what you are growing and willing to share\, and access others in the community and what they are growing too\, so it becomes easy to give and receive with your other community members.” \n“With over 45 perennial foods in the directory and a forum to answer any gardening related question we are really happy we could get this website off the ground thanks to a grant we received from Santos Organics.” \n“The more of us who save seeds and maintain diverse gardens the better it is for us and the wildlife. Not only will the seeds get more accustomed to our local climate making them easier to grow\, but instead of losing plant and food diversity in our community we can maintain or even increase it.” \nThe event at the market is one of the regular seasonal events held by the Byron Hinterland Seed Savers. It encourages more people to grow easy-to-grow food in their home garden and to continue the sharing of these seeds and plants with their friends\, family and neighbours.\nThose with an abundance of plants\, seeds\, cuttings or tubers are encouraged to bring these along to share at the event. \n“Our events are always a place to give and receive freely anything that you need or have an abundance of. It’s also always wonderful to connect with other gardeners\, leave with so many new seeds and plants whilst getting to see other people’s gardening tricks and triumphs\,” said Paul Crebar. \nThe event will be held at Mullumbimby Farmers Market Friday December 11 from 8am – 10:30. For more details visit the Mullumbimby Farmers Market or Byron Hinterland Seed Saving website. \nKiddies Plot\nFamilies love the market because there’s always something to keep the kids busy. In the Kiddie’s Plot\, little ones can get creative with hands-on activities like gardening and permaculture\, screen-printing and arts and crafts. \nMullumbimby Farmers’ Market Famous Merch!\nAnd\, as always\, we’ll be here selling our locally famous Mullumbimby Farmers’ Market merchandise. It is part of our ongoing commitment to educating the farmers of the future\, and highlighting the importance of fresh\, healthy\, local food. \nThe event gives schools the opportunity to come together\, share their kitchen garden story with each other and the wider community\, and enjoy a little inter-school rivalry. \nParticipating schools compete in four categories:\n\nBox of Vegetables from the School Garden\nPreserved\, Pickled or Dried Products\nGarden Fundraising Ideas\nLunchbox Challenge\n\nwhich sees groups of students given ten minutes to create a healthy lunchbox on the spot\, using food sourced primarily from their garden. \nUpdate: And the Winners Are!…\nOur local farmers and chefs of the future once again showed some amazing skills at the 2019 Mullumbimby Farmers Market fifth annual Grow Your Own Lunchbox Challenge. \nSix local primary schools took part – Shearwater Steiner\, Ocean Shores\, The Pocket\, Crabbes Creek\, Brunswick Heads and Wilsons Creek – each bringing fresh produce grown in their school garden to make a fresh\, healthy and delicious lunchbox meal. \nWith so many tasty creations it was a tough job for judges Rebecca Barnes\, Rod Bruin\, Leone McRae and David Forrest (all local farmers)\, but after much deliberation\, they awarded $250 lunch box prizes to Shearwater for Best Lunch Box Main ( Madagascar bean salad)\, The Pocket for Best Snack (frittata)\, Brunswick Heads for Best Snack (baba ghanoush)\, Wilsons Creek Best Dessert (orange cake)\, Crabbes Creek for Best Preserve (mulberry jam) and Ocean Shores Best Drink (pineapple and mint drink). \nAlong with their lunchbox meals\, students also had the opportunity to talk about what they’d been up to in their gardens this year\, and display things they had made or preserved. Wilsons Creek\, for example\, brought preserved oranges\, recycled container gardens and hanging strawberry gardens\, Shearwater had ground turmeric\, Davidson Plum Jam and some of the baby chicks they’d hatched this year\, while Crabbes Creek had marigold and sunflowers seeds they had saved from their garden\, which they shared with other schools and spectators. \nIn the garden category\, prizes of $250 went to Shearwater Steiner School for Best Self Sufficient Garden\, Ocean Shores Public School for Best New Addition the Garden for their Berry Garden\, The Pocket for Best New Garden Club\, Crabbes Creek won best Seed Saving Program\, Brunswick Heads won Best Diversity in the Garden and Wilsons Creek took the prize for Best Garden overall. \nMarket Manager Allie Godfrey said it was more important now than ever that children be taught how to grow their own food and to care for their environment\, and that local schools were doing an incredible job. \n“Looking around today it’s pretty clear that the future is in good hands\,” she said. \nSPECIAL THANKS TO OUR JUDGES\, MC RACHEL TORISE FROM THE BAY FM BELLY SHOW AND TO ALL OF OUR WONDERFUL SCHOOLS AND TEACHERS!

SUMMARY:Byron Seed Share Launch @ the Market
DESCRIPTION:If you live in the Byron Shire and are interested in a low-cost way to grow lots of food year after year in your own home garden\, don’t miss the launch of Byron Seed Share at the Mullumbimby Farmers Market this Friday October 11.\nHeld to celebrate Seed Freedom Fortnight which sees events happening globally\, Byron Hinterland Seed Savers\, the local organisers of the event\, will showcase a new website which serves as the local hub for home gardeners. \nThe event will also be showcasing and giving away locally saved seeds and perennial foods that are suitable for growing in the Byron Shire\, and include discussions and talks with local experts about seed saving\, food security and perennial foods. \nThe event will be held at Mullumbimby Farmers Market Friday October 11 from 8am – 10:30. For more details visit the Mullumbimby Farmers Market or Byron Hinterland Seed Saving website. \n \nKiddies Plot\nFamilies love the market because there’s always something to keep the kids busy. Locally produced and printed and often organic vintage and retro graphic logo t-shirts\, hoodies and\, of course\, our organic eco-shopping bags. \nGreat For Christmas Presents!

SUMMARY:Farmers' Market Feast w Francisco’s Table
DESCRIPTION:Roaming restaurant Francisco’s Table will host a farmers’ market feast under the fig trees of the Mullumbimby Showground\, on Friday\, March 18. \nThe special outdoor event will be held following the Mullumbimby Farmers’ Market and will feature produce sourced fresh from local farmers and producers. \nChef Francisco Smoje and partner Emma –  known for their regular pop-up restaurant events at Coorabell\, Federal\, Bangalow and Corndale halls – will create one of their signature four-course lunches that are enjoyed by guests at shared tables. \nFrancisco says the inspiration to take Francisco’s Table outdoors grew out of his regular Friday morning visits to the Mullumbimby Farmers Market: \n“I always had this idea for us (Francisco’s Table) to be more guerilla-style and pop up here\, there and everywhere. There are a lot of places I’d like to do lunch and dinners that we haven’t explored\, and the market has always been one of them. Every time I sit to have my Nomadic Kitchen breakfast\, I look at the fig trees and just think: ‘this would be an awesome place for a lazy lunch on a Friday afternoon.’” \nThe menu is yet to be revealed\, but will feature the honest\, simple\, and slightly decadent food that is the trademark of Francisco’s Table. Previous feasts have included dishes like marinated local olives\, locally made cheese by Cheeses Loves You and Francisco’s own sourdough; cuttlefish and clams with organic heirloom tomatoes from Fox Farm at Newrybar; braised brisket\, barbecued corn\, mayo and parmesan with mustard greens\, pickles and cabbage; and desserts like poached quinces with creme fraiche\, meringue and roasted cinnamon almonds\, or moscato jelly with poached peaches and vanilla custard. \nA strong exponent of cooking locally and seasonally\, Argentinean-born Francisco goes to great lengths to source his produce from farmers markets or local producers directly\, and says the quality and diversity of produce in our region is hard to beat. \n“It’s an amazing place to be a cook\,” he said. \n• Francisco’s Table is at the Mullumbimby Showgrounds next Friday\, March 18. To book\, call 0416 057 705 or email francisco.food@gmail.com \nKiddies Plot\nFamilies love the market because there’s always something to keep the kids busy.
