SUMMARY:Grow Your Own Lunchbox 2025
DESCRIPTION:Phil Dudman Presents the Mullumbimby Farmers Market’s Grow Your Own Lunchbox Challenge 2025 \nThe Mullumbimby Farmers Market once again hosted its much-loved Grow Your Own Lunchbox Challenge — and this year’s event was bigger and better than ever. Gardening talkback host\, author\, and former ABC Gardening Australia editor Phil Dudman returned as compere\, praising the standard as “an excellent model that should be rolled out regionally\, if not nationally.” He also highlighted the unique opportunity this event gives kids who aren’t sporty\, saying\, “It’s an amazing way for children with other skills to be recognised.” \nPreviously\, we’ve written about this fabulous initiative\, which began in 2015 as part of the market’s commitment to educating the farmers of the future. The challenge is judged across four key areas: growing produce\, creating a healthy lunchbox\, preserving or value-adding to what is grown\, and showcasing creative marketing initiatives. This year we wanted to share what the schools are now achieving — and the incredible creativity that shone through in every entry. \nThe 2025 winners reflected just how imaginative and resourceful our local students have become. Goonengerry School delighted the judges with their croquettes and further impressed with value-add products such as homemade gummies and calendula cream. Mullumbimby earned recognition for best snack with their choko and zucchini relish\, while The Pocket’s macadamia cookies also shone in the snack category. Ocean Shores took out best drink with their refreshing lemon myrtle fizz. Finally\, Main Arm School claimed the overall prize with a beautifully presented lunchbox featuring an okonomiyaki pancake\, a fresh green salad\, strawberry lemonade\, and a beetroot brownie. \nIn the garden awards\, Main Arm was celebrated for best overall garden — a particularly special achievement given that their garden was devastated by the floods and has since been lovingly rebuilt by students and staff. Ocean Shores was awarded best native garden\, and The Pocket won best new innovation with their aeroponic tower. Goonengerry earned the title of best sustainable garden thanks to their impressive wicking beds and healing gardens\, while Mullumbimby was acknowledged for the creativity and scale of its broader initiatives. \nFrom inventive lunchboxes to value-added products and pioneering garden practices\, the innovation in local schools is remarkable. Children are growing a diverse range of vegetables\, tending worm farms\, experimenting with aeroponics\, and even producing natural skincare products. \nPhil Dudman summed up the spirit of the day: “The quality here is incredible. This event not only teaches kids where food comes from but also gives them confidence\, community\, and a sense of achievement.” Teachers reported that when students returned to school with their prizes\, they were welcomed back like heroes. The Grow Your Own Lunchbox Challenge proves that farmers’ markets grow more than food — they grow creativity\, resilience\, and the farmers of the future. \nAnd the Winners Are!…\nLunchbox Prizes for 2025\nBest Main croquettes Goonengerry \nBest Snack Choko Zucchini relish! SUMMARY:Grow Your Own Lunchbox 2024
DESCRIPTION:Growing wheat\, turning it into flour then making bread. Creating seed-raising pots out of\nnewspapers. Constructing hotels for bees and frogs. Raising crops of rain-fed rice. Making\nbeeswax wraps and chook tractors.\nThese are just some of the exciting\, innovative ideas that local primary school children have\ncome up with over the past eight years as part of the annual Grow Your Own Lunchbox\nevent. An initiative of the Mullumbimby Farmers’ Market\, it was launched in 2015 and\,\nbarring a three-year break necessitated by Covid and the floods\, has been eagerly\nanticipated – and planned for – each year since then.\nAround seven Byron Shire schools participate\, coming together on the day to show-case the\nhard work and preparation they have poured into it. The brief was to encourage schools to\ncreate gardens in order that children could grow their own food\, understand its provenance\,\nfind ways to transform it into meals or preserves or pickles. The actual day culminates in the\nGrow Your Own Lunchbox challenge\, whereby groups of students compete good-naturedly\nagainst each other to come up with a healthy lunch box on the spot\, using as ingredients the\nproduce sourced from their own gardens.\nHere\, too\, over the years\, the results have been impressive: frittatas\, Vietnamese rice paper\nrolls and orange polenta cupcakes have been produced alongside lamb on rosemary\nskewers with flatbreads\, cassava cake\, sweet potato crisps with ginger and turmeric\nhummus\, mulberry muesli bars\, herb-infused salts and oils.\nIn addition\, the schools must compete in categories for a box of vegetables from the school\ngarden; for preserved\, pickled or dried products; and for garden fund-raising ideas.\nOver the course of a Friday morning in the glorious grounds of the Mullumbimby Farmers’\nMarket\, these resourceful children – future farmers? future chefs? – engage in amicable\nrivalry\, share the fruits of their kitchen gardens and their stories\, and highlight the\nimportance of healthy\, local and fresh food.\nThis year’s event is on Friday 6 September 2024.

SUMMARY:Byron Hinterland Seed Swap
DESCRIPTION:Byron Hinterland Seeds are coming to Mullum Farmers Market this Friday Sept 22 nd at 8am\nfor a seed swap. Bring any excess seeds/cuttings you have and come and collect some free\nseeds and cuttings.\nWho are Byron Hinterland Seeds?\nWe are a non for profit seed saving network for the Byron Hinterland region\nOur mission:\nIs to encourage the community to grow\, save and share seeds.\nWith the intention of protecting and carrying on the existence of a wide variety of\nrare and wonderfull seeds.\nWe wish to see seeds kept safe in the hands of the people and the community\, as\nthey have been by our ancestors since time immemorial. Seeds when kept local\,\nadapt to our climate overtime producing stronger and more resilient food sources.\nSeeds are given freely and abundantly from the earth so we believe they are to be\nshared and given freely in return.\nWhy is local seed saving & sharing important?\nSeed saving is one of the most important things we can do in our time. Seeds are life\nand our future. Sadly\, seeds have become a commodity in our modern day. Large\ncorporations have acquired control and ownership over the vast majority of the\nworlds seeds. Diversity within plant species is rapidly being lost with many\nvarieties already extinct. Seeds have co-evolved alongside humans\, passed down\nfrom hand to hand. If we do not continue this relationship and act as seed keepers\nwithin our own backyards\, seed lineages may be broken and lost forever.\nIf you would like to support us and stay in loop for future events follow our\nFacebook @byronhinterlandseedsavers\nvisit or become a member of our website \n\n\nHome \n\n\nSeed is not just the source of life. It is the very foundation of our being.”\n~ Vandana Shiva \nMusic\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKiddies Plot\nThe Kids Plot \nFamilies love the market because there’s always something to keep the kids busy. SUMMARY:Mullum Farmers Market Friday 18th June 2021
DESCRIPTION:This week at the market we will have three stages of live music\, free arts and crafts and face painting by donation in the Kids Plot. \nAt the main stage\, we would like to welcome the very talented trio comprising of Peter Hunt\, Bobby Alu and Linden Lester. \nCoral Avenue stage\, we will have Tilley playing and the Chinbible Stage is Will Henderson. \nMusic\nEvery Week Mullumbimby Farmers’ Market hosts live music from talented local musicians.\nThis week’s musicians are: \nMain Stage: Peter Hunt. Bobby Alu and Linden Lester \nChinbible Rumble: Will Henderson \nCoral Ave Cheese: Tilley \nPeter Hunt \nSinger\, trumpeter\, guitarist\, composer\, soloist\, band leader\nPeter Hunt is a Mullumbimby based musician and composer and is the core song\nman for the much-loved world-beat band\, Kooii in which he sings and plays\ntrumpet. He also performs on guitar. A serial-collaborator\, he is focal to several\ngroups that span varying degrees of influence by African\, Jazz\, Reggae and\nEuropean folk music. With Kooii he has released 2 albums and an EP. The group\nhas toured throughout Australia and to New Zealand and the Philippines and has\nbeen favourites at the Woodford Folk Festival as well as performed at the East\nCoast Blues and Roots Festival and Splendour in the Grass. He has also\ncollaborated with Tibetan singer Tenzin Cheogyal\, African-influenced musician\nYeshe and most recently he returned from European and North Amercian tours\nwith Xavier Rudd\, playing trumpet in his group. He also opened tow of Xavier’s\nAmerican concerts performing his songs solo.\nPeter’s solo work opens up the driving rhythms and melodies of Kooii to\nwelcome listeners to a sensitive and heart-nurturing space space held by his\ndistinct voice and intricate finger-work on guitar.\nThere are various ways in which Peter can perform\, from solo to big group\, for\nperformance or for creating ambience and he can put together whatever sized\ngroup is appropriate and guide the feel of the music to fit the occasion.\nExamples of his sound when playing solo on guitar can be found here\, which\nincludes a collection of his own songs as well as a stream of jazz tunes. \nBobby Alu \nMove and be moved. Find your flow and go about each day to the rhythm of your own making. That’s the theme of 2020 for Byron Bay singer\, ukulele strummer and drummer Bobby Alu. It’s been a long-time personal and musical mission for the tropical ambassador\, too. \nAmidst smooth harmonies\, rhythms inspired by a strong family lineage of Polynesian performance\, and unassuming grooves that work a gradual\, smile- inducing high through even a casual listener\, Bobby Alu tunes have a way of sneaking into the subconscious and taking up residence. Every now and then\, one will pop up as a toe-tapping reminder to take it slow\, enjoy the ride. It’s the curator of calm’s way – deliver island-time vibes with gentle optimism rather than forceful instruction\, and encourage the type of reflection best achieved in a hammock. Though it’s not all palm trees and daydreams – there’s a robust energy in Alu’s mastery of traditional Samoan log drums\, and a vitality to his songwriting that nods to world\, roots and pop intelligence. \nSharing a well-nurtured and lengthy musical connection with producer and multi-instrumentalist tour buddy Paulie Bromley (The Beautiful Girls\, george)\, Alu’s recorded and live presence has been boosted from a range of creative alliances \nHaving dedicated his world-class percussion skills to touring internationally with Xavier Rudd for five years\, it was time for the equatorial folk of Bobby Alu to chart its own dedicated course again in 2018. He played 132 shows across 14 countries\, and stopped in at every state and territory of Australia\, supporting John Butler Trio (EU)\, Trevor Hall (EU/AU)\, Nahko (EU)\, UB40 (AU) and The Beautiful Girls (EU/AU) along the way. For the Gold Coast raised artist\, performing and co-writing a song for the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony was a surreal homecoming. 2019 saw BIGSOUND showcases\, a support tour across North America with his friend Xavier Rudd and a national run opening for Busby Marou. Things stepped up on a songwriting and recording level too. Following the exploratory Self-titled debut (triple j Roots ‘n All top 10 album of 2010)\, the clear island-time stylistic intention of 2013’s Take It Slow\, and the cruisey grooves of 2015’s Bay Sessions EP\, Alu spent 2019 back in the studio completing his third album Flow\, which landed Double J feature album on week of release in October 2019\, in 2020 is nominated for the AIR Blues & Roots album of the year. Singles ‘Move’\, ‘Other Side’ and ‘Finally’ received glowing praise and playlist adds on ABC Local Radio and Double J\, with ‘Move’ scoring a nomination for Best Blues & Roots song at the Queensland Music Awards (2019)\, alongside ‘Dust’ in 2020. ‘Other Side’ received an Honourable Mention (top 1%) in the International Songwriting Competition. \nWith a reputation as a performer that leaves audiences feeling truly good in the heart\, Bobby Alu continues to observe the ebb and flow of life while locking into his tried and always true grooves. There’s a fire that comes from the ability to hold a 20\,000 strong festival crowd captive with beats\, and when mixed with the love that comes from serenading your nearest and dearest with an instrument handed down from your mother\, very special moments will always emerge. \nLinden Lester \nLinden Lester is a multi-instrumentalist with over twenty five years of experience as a musician\, teacher and producer. Linden picked up the guitar at the age of eleven and continued study throughout school with several achievements including being chosen to perform at the Sydney Opera House for the prestigious annual concert ‘Encore’\, featuring the highest achievers in year 12 music. Throughout high school Linden also picked up the bass and drums and chose to complete his bachelor of music majoring in bass and his DipEd at Southern Cross University in 2001. \nLinden has since toured to India\, Asia\, UK and Europe with bands Morph\, Saritah and Aurora Jane\, performing at festivals including Glastonbury and Gurtenfestival. He has performed with numerous bands throughout Australia\, performing at festivals including Woodford Folk Festival and the Bellingen Global Carnival. \nWith his main project The Imprints he has performed worldwide at festivals including Glastonbury (UK)\, Edinburgh Fringe Festival (UK)\, Katuaq (Greenland)\, ArtsWells (Canada)\, Atmosphere (Canada)\, Falls Festival (Australia)\, Luminate (New Zealand) and Fusion Festival (Germany). \nLinden has been teaching guitar\, bass and drum kit for twenty years and teaches all ages and skill levels. He teaches a broad range of styles including blues\, jazz\, pop\, rock\, folk\, classical and improvisation skills. \nKiddies Plot\nFamilies love the market because there’s always something to keep the kids busy. In the Kiddie’s Plot\, little ones can get creative with hands-on activities like gardening and permaculture\, screen-printing and arts and crafts. \nMullumbimby Farmers' Market Famous Merch!\nAnd\, as always\, we'll be here selling our locally famous Mullumbimby Farmers' Market merchandise. DESCRIPTION:Music\nEvery Week Mullumbimby Farmers’ Market hosts live music from talented local musicians.\nThis week’s musicians are: \nMain Stage: Skyeater \nCoral Avenue Cheesy stage: Phil the Howler \nChinbible Choons Stage: Tilley \n\nSky Eater is the daring ‘mermaid trip-hop dub’ story of two multi-instrumental warriors: sax-wielding Chelsea Skyeater\, armed with dubbed-out honey vocals\, powerfully vulnerable lyrics and lush keys – and dub soldier TK Bassdread with his artillery of beastly bass\, beats and vocals\, and of course more live dubs. \n\n\nOften vocally described as a “modern day Sade” and compared to Morcheeba\, Sky Eater take their audiences on a “mesmerising and elegant” (Nkechi – Roots n All) journey that is full of soul and jazz moments. They released their debut EP in January 2019 and backed it up with numerous festival appearances and extensive touring throughout Queensland\, New South Wales\, Victoria and Aotearoa New Zealand’s South Island. They are due to release their next single and have a full length album currently in the works. This powerhouse duo is a definite up and coming act that is not to be missed! \n\nKiddies Plot\nFamilies love the market because there’s always something to keep the kids busy. In the Kiddie’s Plot\, little ones can get creative with hands-on activities like gardening and permaculture\, screen-printing and arts and crafts. \nThis week we have arts and crafts and kids yoga for free.
